Collection: VpCI® Paper

What is VpCI Paper?

VpCI paper, also known as Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor paper, is a specialised type of paper designed to protect metal surfaces from corrosion. This innovative paper is coated with vapor phase corrosion inhibitors that release a vapor, forming a protective molecular layer on the metal surface.

This layer acts as a barrier, preventing moisture and other corrosive elements from reaching the metal. VpCI paper is widely used for packaging and storing metal components due to its ease of use, non-toxic nature, and environmental friendliness. Whether you’re dealing with ferrous or non-ferrous metals, VpCI paper offers a reliable solution for corrosion protection.

How VpCI Paper Provides Corrosion Protection

VpCI paper provides exceptional corrosion protection by utilising vapor phase corrosion inhibitors that create a protective molecular layer on metal surfaces. Here’s how it works:

  1. Wrapping or Packaging: The VpCI paper is either wrapped around the metal component or placed inside a package containing the metal.
  2. Vapor Release: The vapor phase corrosion inhibitors in the paper coating vaporize, releasing a protective vapor.
  3. Vapor Diffusion: This vapor diffuses through the air and comes into contact with the metal surface.
  4. Protective Layer Formation: Upon contact, the vapor forms a protective molecular layer on the metal surface, effectively preventing corrosion.

This process ensures that the metal remains free from moisture and other corrosive substances, making VpCI paper an ideal choice for protecting a wide range of metal surfaces, including both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Cortec has a versatile range of market leading vapor phase corrosion inhibitors papers

Many are completely renewable, fully recyclable and repulpable yet still offer advanced rust and corrosion protection for goods traveling through the supply chain. Either being transported or stored.

The proprietary Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VpCI®) offer a superior level of protection when compared to traditional VCI papers and other rust prevention methods. VpCI papers provide moisture barrier properties comparable to polyethylene and wax papers while being fully recyclable and easier to dispose of, making them a superior choice for packaging and protecting metal items.

For those who do not want to compromise on performance whilst honouring any environmental responsibilities/commitments consider either EcoShield® VpCI 144 or CorShield® VPCI 146.

Each contain USDA approved 69% & 92% bio based product respectively

Both conform commercially to MIL-P-3420E with VpCI 144 displaying a water based barrier coating, Highly resistant’s to contaminants like oil and grease. Whilst VpCI 146 is both high performance and compatible with food articles.

For those looking for a heavy duty oil resistant paper take a look at VpCI 148 for a multifunctional oil, grease and solvent resistant paper.

If you are looking for an anti static paper consider EcoSonic® ESD Anti Static Paper for a multipurpose solution. This sophisticated product is powered by Nano-VpCI® and complies with both MIL PRF 3420 G (for Vapour Inhibition) & MIL PRF 81705 D (for static decay rate and surface resistivity)

VpCI Paper Application

Ease of Use of VpCI Paper for Corrosion Protection

All Cortec VpCI papers are easy to use with no concentrations to calculate or methods of application to maintain. Depending on your choice of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor Paper you can either simply wrap your items or interleave the paper between the parts. You then just fold the edges down together to create paper folds and ensure no air flow (some use a heat sealer machine) and use adhesive tape if necessary to hold paper folds in place.

The VpCI molecules then migrate (or evaporate) from the paper carrier to the surface of the metal to be protected. When the parts are removed the molecules simply evaporate off the metal. The surface is then dry and ready to use.

Choosing the Right VpCI Paper

Selecting the appropriate VpCI paper involves considering several factors to ensure optimal corrosion protection for your specific application. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. Type of Metal: Different metals require different types of corrosion protection. For instance, ferrous metals like steel and iron need a different approach compared to non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper.
  2. Level of Corrosion Protection: The required level of protection depends on the packaging and storage conditions. Metals stored in humid environments may need higher levels of corrosion protection.
  3. Packaging and Storage Conditions: The conditions under which the metal components are stored and packaged will influence the choice of VpCI paper. For example, if the components are stored with other items, a higher level of protection might be necessary.
  4. Grease Resistance: If the metal components are exposed to grease or oil, opting for a grease-resistant VpCI paper is essential.
  5. ESD Protection: For metal components sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD), choosing a VpCI paper with ESD protection is crucial.

Popular types of VpCI paper include:

  • Reinforced Paper: Ideal for heavy-duty applications, offering added strength and durability.
  • Grease-Resistant Paper: Perfect for environments where metal components are exposed to grease or oil.
  • ESD Paper: Designed for applications where electrostatic discharge sensitivity is a concern.
  • Wax Papers: Suitable for applications requiring a high level of corrosion protection.

Consulting with a corrosion engineer or packaging specialist can help determine the best type of VpCI paper for your specific needs, ensuring maximum protection for your metal components.
