Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly is Cortec M-528, and how does it prevent corrosion?
Cortec M-528 is a liquid vapor phase and contact corrosion inhibitor package designed for water-based and PAG-based lubricants and metalworking fluids. It prevents corrosion by forming a protective molecular layer on metal surfaces, even in hard-to-reach areas, protecting against corrosive elements like moisture and oxygen.
• Is Cortec M-528 primarily for water-based systems, or can it be used with other fluid types?
Yes, Cortec M-528 is specifically formulated as an additive for water-based and PAG-based lubricants and metalworking fluids. It's designed to be soluble in water and glycols, making it ideal for these types of systems.
• What kind of metals does Cortec M-528 offer protection for?
Cortec M-528 is a multi-metal protectant, safeguarding carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and bronze from corrosion.
• Does M-528 offer both immediate and long-term corrosion protection?
Absolutely, Cortec M-528 provides both flash (immediate) and long-term corrosion protection for the metals it's applied to, ensuring durability over time.
• How does the VpCI® (Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor) technology in Cortec M-528 actually work?
The VpCI® technology in Cortec M-528 allows the inhibitor to vaporize and travel throughout an enclosed space, such as a fluid system or void, where it then condenses on all metal surfaces, even those not in direct contact with the liquid. This forms a thin, protective molecular layer that actively repels corrosive elements.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• Is Cortec M-528 a single-phase or dual-phase corrosion inhibitor?
Cortec M-528 is a dual-phase corrosion inhibitor, offering protection in both the contact phase (where the fluid is in direct contact with the metal) and the vapor phase (protecting metals in the headspace above the fluid).
• What is the typical appearance and pH of Cortec M-528?
Cortec M-528 typically appears as a clear yellowish to amber liquid and has a pH range of 8-9 when measured at 1% in water.
Application and Usage
• In what specific industries or applications is Cortec M-528 most commonly used?
Cortec M-528 is primarily used in hydraulic fluids for sub-sea production control systems, but it also finds application in synthetic coolants and cutting fluids, aerosol formulations, radiator fluids, and water-based drilling muds.
• Can Cortec M-528 be used to protect equipment during temporary shutdowns or long-term storage?
Yes, Cortec M-528 is excellent for protecting important hydraulic equipment during shipping, storage, and even during temporary shutdowns or long-term mothballing, ensuring the machinery remains in pristine condition.
• How does M-528 contribute to the protection of metalworking and hydraulic fluids?
