Aldi Forced to Amend its Crackers’ Packaging
Aldi is a well-known discount supermarket brand, which provides customers with smart shopping options and extremely high-quality items at the lowest prices possible.
The company was recently in the news for a packaging faux pas, where a graphic designer’s worst nightmare became reality when people started to point out an extremely embarrassing error from an innocent design on the packaging of Aldi’s range of gourmet cheese crackers.
The product packaging had a design that had the dreaded C-word capitalised, which made consumers question it with some even thinking that the company’s design on the package was making people think of rude words.
What Went Wrong with Aldi Packaging
Due to some incompetent designers, the graphic design on the product package of discount supermarket Aldi’s luxury brand of crackers had four of the letters of the word country in capital letters. Whilst creating amusement with some customers the unfortunate mistake made many people take to social media to seek an explanation from the company and bring the issue to their attention.
Tom Coulton was the first person that had communicated with Aldi and brought the unfortunate matter to their attention by posting feedback on the company’s Facebook page. In his post, Coulton said he was very curious about the company’s choice of letter capitalisation on the package design of its rosemary gourmet crackers. Several other people also pointed out the issue on Twitter too. The company responded to one of these posts by thanking the person for the feedback and saying it will be passed on to be urgently discussed. The contact from people who had seen the packaging in a shop forced Aldi to alter the capital fonts on the cracker packaging and remove them completely thus removing the unintended expletive wording. The packaging now shows other letters within the word country enlarged that now steer it clear of the earlier mishap.
An Aldi spokesperson said that the company’s crackers have been made available in a completely new packaging since the 6th of August. It was also emphasised that only a handful of the flawed packaging was available on the shelves. It means that some offending packages are still out there, displayed on the shelves, which are likely to create a shock to innocent eyes.
The Perils of Retail Packaging Errors
Packaging plays an important role in retail. It needs to be eye-catching and informative, while also being durable enough to protect the product inside. Unfortunately, mistakes can happen during the packaging process, which can be costly for businesses. One common mistake is using the wrong type of packaging for the product. For example, using a cardboard box for a fragile item can result in damage during shipping. Another mistake is failing to include vital information on the packaging, such as instructions for use or warnings about allergies. This can lead to customer frustration and even safety hazards. Also, poor packaging design can make a product look cheap and unappealing, driving customers away. The Aldi cracker issue is one of the perfect examples of selling items on the shelf that have a product packaging with a spelling error or mistype that can deliver communication and an impression to their customers that was not intended.
By avoiding the above mistakes, businesses can ensure that their retail packaging is always effective and supportive of their brand identity.
A Brief Overview of Aldi
Aldi is a German based grocery store chain that operates over 11,000 stores in more than 20 countries. Aldi offers a wide variety of products, including food, beverages, Aldi own-brand products, and Aldi Crackers. Aldi’s prices are typically lower than those of other supermarkets, due to Aldi’s efficient operating model. Aldi has a no-frills approach to retailing, with a limited number of product offerings and a small store footprint. Aldi’s inventory turnover is very high, which allows Aldi to keep its operating costs low. Aldi also does not accept manufacturer coupons. Instead, Aldi uses a “Double Guarantee” policy, which refunds customers twice the difference if they find a cheaper comparable product at another place. Aldi is committed to providing quality products at low prices, and its customer satisfaction ratings are among the highest in the supermarket industry.
