Cortec VpCI® 309 is a market leading corrosion inhibitor powder that offers unbeatable corrosion protection for a wide variety of assets that contain ‘hard to reach’ areas and spaces.
VPCI 309 is a vapour phase corrosion inhibitor based VCI powder suitable for long term continuous corrosion protection of ferrous metals in ‘hard to reach’ areas, void spaces, restricted areas, cavities, and awkward inner spaces.
Cortec VPCI 309 utilises a highly effective ‘dry method’ to guard metals within an enclosed area.
The VPCI® technology essentially evaporates and is absorbed onto the metal surfaces that are exposed within the surrounding area or space. Effective when dealing with interior cavities for plant equipment, heavy machinery, etc.
VPCI 309-SF is available as a silica-free specification, available made to order.
VPCI 309 Key Features

How to apply VPCI 309
You can apply the 309-powder formula by wither dusting, fogging, or sprinkling. Following application, you can simply cover, close & seal the inner void space.
Fogging can be easily done using a low-pressure air hose complete with a sand blasting cup. Or a wet & dry vacuum pump (inverted) can also be used as well as conventional sand blasting machine systems.
If you require advice regarding specific dosages & equipment recommendations, please contact technical services. For most projects 0.3 – 0.5 oz per ft³ (300 – 500 grm per m³) will be sufficient.
How to Remove
When removal is required VPCI 309 & 309 SF in powder form can be removed using a low-pressure air gun or water rinse. In liquid form this does not require removal for most applications.

Extra Precautions to take when using this product include :
- Powder Caking – this may occur during a wet to dry cycle, or when exposed to high heat! This state requires removal using mechanical equipment or using an industrial acid solution. To avoid this do not over apply or unevenly disperse the formula.
- Power Solubility – Powder is not soluble in hydrocarbon-based fluids. Rinse powder from any vessels prior to adding hydrocarbon fluids.
- Welding – Powder should be removed from areas before welding or other high temperature treatments.
- Silica – This formula contains Silica. It is not recommended for steam type applications (e.g. Boiler corrosion Inhibitors). Please use the VPCI 309 SF variation for Silica sensitive projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly is Cortec VpCI-309 and what's its primary function?
Cortec VpCI-309 is a unique Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI) powder designed specifically for the dry protection of ferrous metals in enclosed, hard-to-reach spaces like cavities, voids, and recessed areas. Its primary function is to prevent corrosion by forming a protective molecular layer on all accessible metal surfaces.
• How does Cortec VpCI-309 protect metals from rust and corrosion?
This innovative powder works by subliming, meaning it transitions directly from a solid into a vapor. These VpCI molecules then travel throughout the enclosed space, adsorbing onto all exposed metal surfaces, including those hidden within cavities. This forms a monomolecular inhibiting layer that actively prevents rust and other forms of corrosion.
• Which specific types of metals does Cortec VpCI-309 protect?
Cortec VpCI-309 is specifically formulated to provide comprehensive corrosion protection for ferrous metals. This includes common materials like carbon steel, stainless steel, and various steel alloys, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of industrial applications.
• Is Cortec VpCI-309 environmentally friendly or does it contain harmful chemicals?
Cortec VpCI-309 is designed with safety and environmental responsibility in mind. It's free from silicates, phosphates, nitrites, and heavy metals, making it a more environmentally conscious choice compared to many traditional corrosion protection methods.
• How long can I expect Cortec VpCI-309 to provide corrosion protection?
When applied correctly in an enclosed space, Cortec VpCI-309 is engineered to deliver continuous corrosion protection for up to 24 months, offering long-term peace of mind for your valuable assets.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• What are the primary methods for applying Cortec VpCI-309 powder?
Applying Cortec VpCI-309 is quite flexible; you can apply it in a dry form by dusting, fogging, or sprinkling the powder into the enclosed area. The method you choose will often depend on the size and accessibility of the space you need to protect.
• Can I easily fog Cortec VpCI-309 into complex internal structures?
Absolutely! Fogging is a highly effective way to apply Cortec VpCI-309, especially for complex internal structures. You can easily achieve this using a low-pressure air hose equipped with a sandblasting cup, or even by inverting a wet/dry vacuum, which helps distribute the VpCI vapors evenly throughout the space.
• Do I need to do extensive surface preparation before applying Cortec VpCI-309?
One of the significant advantages of Cortec VpCI-309 is that it requires little to no surface preparation. This saves valuable time and labor, allowing for quicker and more efficient application.
• What's the recommended dosage for Cortec VpCI-309 to ensure effective protection?
For optimal and continuous protection, especially in humid or contaminated atmospheres, a typical dosage recommendation for Cortec VpCI-309 is approximately 0.3-0.5 ounces per cubic foot of enclosed space (or 300-500 grams per cubic meter).
• Is it necessary to remove Cortec VpCI-309 from metal surfaces before use or shipping?
No, in most cases, it's not necessary to remove the protective VpCI layer formed by Cortec VpCI-309 before shipping or using the protected products. This means your items are ready for immediate use upon arrival, saving time and labor.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• How can I remove Cortec VpCI-309 if it's absolutely necessary?
If removal is required, such as before welding or other high-temperature processes, Cortec VpCI-309 in its powder form can typically be removed using a low-pressure air gun or by simply rinsing with water.
