New Carbon Positive Packaging

Lush has launched a new sustainability initiative with a product made entirely from biodegradable cork, its first official plastic-free packaging product. This innovative move is incredibly encouraging and further demonstrates Lush's commitment to preserving the environment. Along with their "Naked" collections of packaging-free beauty products, Lush is proving that sustainability doesn't have to sacrifice performance or quality.

Lush Health and Beauty revealed their new plastic-free packaging pots, which they will use to store a range of shampoos and other packaging-free products. The new product, made from an abundant resource found in Spain, Portugal, and other European countries, truly proves Lush’s commitment to making a positive impact on the environment. The cork comes from trees that are not cut down in the process but instead, the bark is removed once every decade!

Lush's ambitious new products are sure to inspire and bring an exciting choice of sustainable alternatives to environmentally conscious consumers around the world.

Miles King, a nature writer, commented that the cork raw material is traditionally used to make wine corks. It has a lot of benefits including being anti-bacterial, fire retardant, and water resistant. In addition, the material is flexible and easy to manipulate into different shapes and sizes. At the end of its lifespan, it can also be composted and recycled easily.

As it comes from a ‘living tree' the material has a remarkable ability to absorb carbon, helping to mitigate the climate change emergency and lower the company's carbon footprint. Also, each biodegradable cork pot can sequester at least 1 kilogram of C02.

The company has already taken the first shipment of 6000 pots partnering with green logistics company New Dawn Traders and is set to purchase over 500,000 pieces in the next twelve months. The pots were shipped by sea rather than air to reduce the carbon footprint of the supply chain journey.

The premium price of this sustainable packaging solution is expensive when compares to cheaper solutions like aluminium foil packaging, however, Lush is making the commitment regardless putting the sustainability of the planet over the costs of its packaging.

Lush is a Leader in Plastic Free Retailing

Lush Health & Beauty is a business that has a very strong record when it comes to the use of plastic-free packaging. The company is regarded as a leader in corporate ethical responsibility, and they have traded as a 100% cruelty-free and vegetarian business since its launch in 1995.

Around half of their product range uses packaging that is free of plastic and the products that currently do not are usually liquid based that require packaging for liquids (shower gels and face masks, but even in these products the plastic is 100% recyclable.

The company will continue its growth towards 100% plastic free and sees its growth in this. In January they opened their first 100% plastic-free store and there are plans for more across Europe.
