Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly is Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease, and what makes it special?
Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease is a high-quality lubricant specifically designed for use in food and beverage processing environments where there's a chance of incidental food contact. What sets it apart is its formulation from natural seed oils, making it significantly bio-based, biodegradable, and an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based greases.
• Is this grease truly "food safe" for machinery? What certifications does it hold?
Absolutely, this grease is designed with food safety in mind. It's formulated in accordance with U.S. FDA regulation 21 CFR 178.3570 for "Lubricants With Incidental Food Contact," and it's also registered with the NSF Nonfood Compounds Registration Program as an H1 category lubricant, meaning it's approved for applications where incidental food contact might occur.
• How "green" is this food machinery grease, really?
This grease is incredibly "green," containing an impressive 96% USDA certified biobased content. This high percentage of renewable natural seed oils, combined with its biodegradability and non-toxicity to plants, truly makes it a sustainable choice for your lubrication needs.
• What's the difference between the #1 and #2 grades of this food machinery grease?
The Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease comes in two NLGI grades: #1 and #2. The #1 grade is typically better suited for lower-speed bearings, oscillating machinery, and applications operating in ambient or cooler temperatures, while the #2 grade is generally preferred for bearings, gears, and machine slides, offering slightly higher consistency.
• How does this bio-based grease stack up against traditional mineral oil-based greases?
This bio-based grease offers superior lubricity compared to many conventional petroleum-based greases. Beyond that, it provides excellent environmental benefits due to its natural seed oil base and biodegradability, helping you move away from potentially hazardous mineral oil products without compromising performance.
• Does this grease offer any protection beyond just lubrication?
Yes, it certainly does. In addition to providing superior lubrication to moving parts, Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease is formulated to protect ferrous metals from rust and also helps protect equipment and gears under heavy shock loads.
• What kind of metals is this grease safe to use on?
While the product description primarily highlights its general lubrication and corrosion protection, it's designed for use on metals found in food processing machinery, offering protection for ferrous metals and suitable for multi-metal applications.
• Where exactly can I use Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease in a food processing plant?
You can use this grease effectively wherever an H1 category lubricant is needed within food and beverage processing industries. This includes, but isn't limited to, low-speed bearings, oscillating machinery, gears, and machine slides.
• Can this grease handle a wide range of operating temperatures in my machinery?
Yes, one of the key advantages of Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease is its ability to perform well across a wide range of operating temperatures, ensuring consistent lubrication even in varied conditions.
• Is this grease suitable for machinery that experiences heavy loads or extreme pressure?
Absolutely. This grease contains extreme pressure additives, making it well-suited for demanding lubrication applications and providing robust protection for equipment and gears that operate under heavy shock loads.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• How does this grease hold up against water exposure and washout?
Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease demonstrates good adhesion properties, which helps it resist water washout, ensuring your critical machinery remains lubricated even in damp or washdown environments common in food processing.
• Can this grease be used for general industrial lubrication, or is it strictly for food machinery?
While it's specifically designed and certified for food machinery where incidental contact with food is possible, its high performance and bio-based nature mean it could be used in other general industrial applications where a sustainable, high-quality lubricant is desired, although its primary benefit is in food contact scenarios.
• What specific types of machinery benefit most from this grease?
Machinery with moving metal parts, particularly those in food and beverage processing facilities that require H1 category lubricants, will benefit immensely. This includes conveyors, mixers, packaging equipment, and any other mechanical components that require reliable, food-safe lubrication.
• Is there any special preparation needed for the machinery before applying this grease?
Typically, you would want to ensure the surfaces are clean and free from old, incompatible greases or contaminants to maximize the performance of the new lubricant. However, specific preparation instructions would depend on the machinery's maintenance guidelines.
• Can this grease be mixed with other types of grease already in my equipment?
While the product is designed for excellent performance on its own, it's generally best practice to avoid mixing different types of greases unless compatibility is explicitly confirmed by the manufacturer. For optimal results and to maintain its H1 certification integrity, it's recommended to thoroughly clean out old grease before applying the Cortec EcoLine® Bio-Based Food Machinery Grease.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
