Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly are Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards and why are they important?
Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards, like those offered by Valdamark Direct, are small, convenient paper cards embedded with moisture-sensitive spots that visually change color to indicate the presence of specific relative humidity levels within a sealed environment. They are crucial for monitoring moisture-sensitive goods because they provide a quick, real-time visual check of whether the desiccant inside a package is still effective or if a moisture barrier has been compromised, ensuring product integrity without the use of harmful cobalt chloride.
• How do these Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards actually work to show humidity?
These cards function through a chemical reaction: the indicating spots are impregnated with a special, non-toxic chemical that reacts to moisture in the surrounding air. As the relative humidity increases, the spots absorb moisture and undergo a visible color change, typically from a dry brown to a humid azure (blue), giving you an immediate visual cue of the humidity level.
• Why is it beneficial that these cards are "cobalt-free"?
The "cobalt-free" aspect is a significant advantage because it means these Valdamark Direct cards do not contain cobalt dichloride, a substance that has been classified as hazardous and potentially carcinogenic by various regulatory bodies, including the European Union. This makes them a much safer and more environmentally friendly choice for both users and the products they are protecting, especially in industries with strict safety and environmental regulations.
• What color changes can I expect to see on a Valdamark Direct Cobalt-Free HIC?
The specific color change on Valdamark Direct's Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards typically goes from a dry brown to a humid azure (blue). Each spot on the card corresponds to a specific relative humidity percentage, so you can easily see which humidity threshold has been met or exceeded by the corresponding color change.
• Are Cobalt-Free HICs from Valdamark Direct reversible, meaning they change back if humidity drops?
Yes, the chemically impregnated spots on Valdamark Direct's Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards are reversible. This means if the humidity levels within the packaging decrease, often due to the desiccant still working effectively, the spots will revert to their original "dry" color, indicating that moisture levels have dropped again. However, it's important to note that after prolonged exposure to very high humidity, their accuracy might diminish.

• Can these cards be used for long-term storage applications?
While they provide an excellent instant visual check, for long-term storage, Valdamark Direct's Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards are best used in conjunction with appropriate desiccants inside a sealed moisture barrier bag. They will indicate if the desiccant is exhausted or if the package integrity has been compromised, prompting intervention to protect the stored items.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• Are they suitable for monitoring humidity in museum or archival environments?
Yes, Valdamark Direct's Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Cards can be a valuable tool for monitoring ambient humidity levels within display cases, storage boxes, and archival environments where sensitive artifacts, documents, and textiles need protection from moisture-related damage. They offer a simple, non-intrusive way to keep an eye on environmental conditions.
• Can Valdamark Direct's HICs be used in food packaging?
While the primary focus is often on electronics and military applications, the non-toxic nature of Cobalt-Free HICs from Valdamark Direct makes them suitable for some food packaging applications where moisture control is crucial for shelf life and quality, though specific regulations for direct food contact should always be confirmed.
• How do I properly place a Valdamark Direct Cobalt-Free HIC inside a package?
For optimal monitoring, place the Cobalt-Free Humidity Indicator Card inside the sealed moisture barrier package, ideally near the items you are protecting, and ensure it's visible without needing to open the package. It should be used in conjunction with a desiccant, such as silica gel packets, to absorb moisture.
• What do the different spots on the Cobalt-Free HIC indicate?
Each individual spot on the Valdamark Direct Cobalt-Free HIC represents a specific percentage of relative humidity. For instance, a card might have spots for 5%, 10%, 15%, or higher, meaning that if the 10% spot has changed color, the humidity inside the package has reached at least 10% RH.
• How do I interpret the color change on the card to understand the humidity level?
You read the card by observing the color of each indicating spot. If the spot that corresponds to a certain humidity level (e.g., 30%) has changed from brown to azure, it means the relative humidity inside the package is at or above 30%. You should always refer to the color guide provided on the card itself for precise interpretation.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• What action should I take if a spot on my Valdamark Direct HIC indicates high humidity?
If a spot on your Valdamark Direct HIC shows a high humidity level, it's a clear signal that the moisture barrier packaging may have been compromised, or the desiccant has reached its absorption capacity. You should immediately inspect the package for damage, and consider replacing the desiccant or re-packaging the contents to prevent moisture damage.
• Can these cards be reactivated if they've changed color due to humidity?
While the chemical reaction is reversible, meaning the spots can change back to their dry color if placed in a very dry environment (e.g., with fresh desiccant), it's generally recommended by industry standards, such as JEDEC J-STD-033, that Type 1 HICs exposed to 60% or greater RH are no longer considered accurate.
