Frequently Asked Questions

• What exactly is Cortec VpCI-414 and what's its primary function?

Cortec VpCI-414 is a high-performance, water-based, and biodegradable cleaner and degreaser. Its main job is to effectively remove various contaminants like light oils, greases, dirt, and even temporary protective coatings from metal and painted surfaces, all while offering integrated corrosion protection.

• Is Cortec VpCI-414 safe for the environment and users?

Yes, it's designed with environmental responsibility in mind; it's water-based and biodegradable. This formulation is non-flammable and generally doesn't require extensive personal protective equipment for application, making it safer for both the environment and those using it.

• What's special about Cortec VpCI-414 compared to other industrial cleaners?

What truly sets Cortec VpCI-414 apart is its dual action: it not only cleans and degreases effectively but also provides multi-metal corrosion protection after the cleaning process, preventing flash rust and offering short-term preservation. This eliminates the need for a separate corrosion inhibitor step.

• Can Cortec VpCI-414 be used on different types of metals?

Absolutely. This versatile cleaner is formulated to protect a broad range of metals including carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, cast iron, copper, and brass (with less than 30% zinc), ensuring it's a go-to solution for many metal cleaning tasks.

• How do I prepare surfaces before applying Cortec VpCI-414?

Before applying Cortec VpCI-414, it's best to ensure the surface is clear of any loose debris or excessively thick layers of contaminants that could hinder the cleaner's effectiveness. While it's a powerful degreaser, a quick brush-off of heavy dirt can improve results.

Relevant products you may want to consider:

• What are the recommended dilution ratios for Cortec VpCI-414?

The dilution ratio depends on the cleaning intensity needed: for light cleaning, mix 50ml per litre (5% dosage); for medium cleaning, use 100ml per litre (10% dosage); for heavy cleaning, it's 200ml per litre (20% dosage); and for coating removal, a higher concentration of 600ml per litre (60% dosage) is recommended.

• What's the best way to apply Cortec VpCI-414 for effective cleaning?

For optimal results, Cortec VpCI-414 is best applied by spraying, either at full strength or as a diluted mix, using an airless or pump-type sprayer. Immersion or dipping tanks can also be used, especially for smaller parts.

• How long should I let Cortec VpCI-414 sit on the surface after application?

After applying the cleaner, it's generally recommended to let the product stand wet on the surface for approximately 15 minutes. For heavier films or coatings that have cured for a longer time, a longer dwell time may be beneficial, and reapplication might be necessary.

• What’s the best method for rinsing Cortec VpCI-414 and the removed contaminants?

To remove the cleaner and the dissolved contaminants, a power washer set between 50-300 psi (3.4-21 bar) with water temperatures ranging from 115° to 160°F (46°-71°C) is ideal. However, for many applications, a common garden hose and nozzle can also be sufficient.

• Can I use Cortec VpCI-414 at room temperature, or does it need to be heated?

One of the practical benefits of Cortec VpCI-414 is its effectiveness at room temperature, which helps reduce energy consumption. However, for extremely heavy hydrocarbons or very stubborn residual coatings, using it in a heated bath can enhance its cleaning power.

Relevant products you may want to consider:

• Is it necessary to rinse the product completely, or can it be left to dry?

While it's typically rinsed off after cleaning, Cortec VpCI-414 is designed to remain active and continue providing corrosion protection even if some residue is left to dry, which is a significant advantage for temporary protection.

• How does Cortec VpCI-414 handle temporary coating removal?

Cortec VpCI-414 is specifically formulated to be a heavy-duty temporary coating remover. It’s highly effective at dissolving substances like Cosmoline™, Cortec VpCI 368, VpCI 388, VpCI 389, and other non-silicone-based wax coatings from various surfaces.

• Can Cortec VpCI-414 be used to prepare metal surfaces before applying new coatings?

Absolutely. Its ability to thoroughly clean and degrease, while also providing a short-term corrosion inhibiting layer, makes it an excellent choice for surface preparation, ensuring a clean and protected base for subsequent coatings.

• Is Cortec VpCI-414 suitable for cleaning machinery parts and equipment?

Yes, it's highly effective for machinery maintenance. It can tackle light oils, greases, and general grime on industrial equipment, ensuring parts are clean and protected from flash corrosion after the cleaning process.

• Can this cleaner be used in automotive workshops for vehicle component cleaning?

Given its effectiveness on oils, greases, and various metals including steel and cast iron, Cortec VpCI-414 is well-suited for cleaning automotive components and general workshop maintenance.

Relevant products you may want to consider:

• How effective is Cortec VpCI-414 at removing stubborn oil and grease build-up?
