How does Silica Gel work?
Silcia Gel Packets can be found in a wide variety of products.
Essentially Silica provides the same function as Desiccant due to it’s water vapor retention ability.
In commercial and retail markets this can prevent the build up and growth of mold on products as well as other hazards that would lead to moisture damage like condensation.
E.g. A bottle of vitamins or tablet supplements should contain a small sachet of Silica Gel as the contents is likely to be sensitive to excess moisture and humidity.
Similarly for industrial applications and electronics it prevents these moisture damages, which can result in a product becoming defect or arriving ‘not’ in factory condition.
Silica Gel MiniPax® contain a highly porous material that is essential a Silicone Dioxide based sand. Each of the Silica Gel Packets contains crystals which each have millions of tiny pores. Each capable of absorbing over 40% of it’s own weight in moisture. This is generally considered to be about a 35% better absorption rate than Desiccant bags. Making Silica Gel the preferred choice where absorption efficiency or the weight of the packets themselves are key drivers for the project.
One key advantage with Silica Gel is that no chemical reaction takes place when moisture is absorbed. This allows the product to be highly versatile as the process takes place internally within the membrane of the pores themselves. No byproducts and no waste or chemical residue. Even when completely saturated with moisture the Silica Gel will still retain the appearance of a ‘dry product’ to the naked eye. They stay completely the same shape.
Furthermore in a enclosed space the relative humidity levels can be taken down to about 40%, giving optimal humidity for goods being transported or stored.

What is Silica Gel ?
Silica gel is a porous, granular, and transparent from of silicon dioxide. It is synthetically derived from sodium silicate. It is harder than the common gels found in homes and appears like a crystal. Silica gel is hygroscopic (tend to absorb humidity from air). Since it is a drying agent or desiccant, it is commonly found in the form of little packets in various products sold in the market like purses, shoe boxes, leather products, collectibles, silverware, musical instruments, jewellery, tools etc. Valdamark Direct offers one of the best quality Silica Gel MiniPax with Tyvek casing technology and TopDry desiccant packets, which it ships to anywhere in the world, including Europe and the UK.
How does Silica Gel work ?
Being a high capacity adsorbent, it is comprised of small inter-connecting pores, which attract and retain moisture through capillary condensation and adsorption. To put simply, it has a very high surface area (about 800m2/g). This allows the absorption of water, enabling it to be a desiccant. Silica is non-toxic, inert, non-inflammable, and hence extremely safe material. It can be used to protect a variety of items such as medicines, foods and other sensitive materials. Despite trapping the moisture and retaining it, silica remains physically unchanged.
Self-Indicating and Non-Indicating Silica Gels
Self-Indicating Gels are clear gels injected with chemicals or sensitive additives, which change colour when in contact with moisture. Such sachets are used in products that require long-term storage. When the entire colour of the sachet containing silica gel has changed, it indicates saturation and the need to get the sachet replaced.
There are various forms of self-indicating silica gels, namely:
Orange to green: The colour of such gels, when dry, is originally orange, which eventually turns into dark green when they’re nearing exhaustion. These are non-toxic.
Orange to colourless: These non-toxic gels use iron salts as additives and originally have a deep orange colour when dry. The colour turns to a pale yellow hue when they’re close to exhaustion. These are robust indicators suited for reuse and normally offered in the form of beads and granules.
Blue to Pink: These are originally blue in colour when dry. Eventually, they turn pink when saturated. Though not hazardous, these are considered toxic because they use cobalt chloride for colouring properties. Hence, there are certain safety norms for their disposal.
Non-Indicating Silica Gels: Non-indicating gels don’t have any indicatives or chemicals infused in them and hence possess the original colour of transparent white. These gels, when saturated, display a hazy white or milky hue.

What are the benefits of using silica gel as desiccant?
Silica gel has unlimited shelf life when stored in an airtight condition.
It can be reused and regenerated when required. To reuse, it has to be slightly heated in order to remove the adsorbed moisture.

Silica gel is offered in different forms based on packaging and size:
Silica is typically offered in the form of flexible small containers such as bags or sachets. These are breathable and robust so that water molecules are able to pass through and get absorbed by the silica gel inside. Usually, they are made of cotton, paper, fabric or Tyvek.
The Silica Gel Minipax utilize Tyvek casing technology along with a viewing window feature on the rear side of the packets. This allows monitoring of colour change of the self-indicating gel inside.

Bulk Packs: Though often found in the form of sachets, silica gel also has its use in the loose form.
