Nowadays, hunger is probably the biggest problem across the world. One human being in every six seconds or 25,000 people in a single day die as a result of hunger-related diseases.
Numana Inc. started in 2008 as a 501c-3 public charity, non-profit organization is committed to international hunger relief. It has been coordinating food packaging incidents across the US, thanks to the efforts of 178,000 volunteers.
The volunteers have put together over 32,000,000 simple and healthy meals for 2- to 4-hour shifts in an assembly line.
Meals consist of rice, dried pinto beans, soy protein, blends of vitamins and minerals, especially prepared to help the immune systems of less nourished people.
Numana Inc. Calls Volunteers of All Ages and Skill Levels
These processes involve the ingredients being evaluated, packed into bags, weighed, locked and finally put into boxes for shipment. The entire cost is 30 cents per meal, which includes cost of all ingredients, packaging and international shipping.
Numana Inc. has coordinated over 178,000 volunteers to pack over 32,000,000 meals since its inception in December of 2009. The meals that will be packaged by Athens FUMC will be distributed to other cities in the U.S. and around the world. The Henderson County Food Pantry will act as the distributor.
In the past, meals have been shipped to foreign places such as Vietnam, Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador, Columbia, Rwanda, Liberia and South Africa. This year, Numana Inc., will be giving special importance to the region of Nepal as the main receiver of meals shipped overseas.
Athens First United Methodist Church (FUMC) has joined hands with Numana Inc. to help overcome this worldwide problem of hunger. To achieve this goal, they have set up a target of having 100 volunteers pack 10,000 meals on Sunday, the 30th of August. They have cordially invited the community to join this noble mission. People of all ages and all skill levels are welcome.
Anyone interested in helping them on Sunday can join the group for one combined workshop service at 10 a.m. Volunteers will be released to begin assembling the meals, followed by a lunch consisting of cornbread and beans to honour the completion of this noble mission.
